What changed on July 1, 2026
MiCA is the European regulation on crypto-assets. On July 1, 2026, the transition period ended across the European Union: to provide services to people who live in the EU, an exchange needs authorization from a European supervisor and must be listed in the ESMA register.
An exchange without that authorization isn’t supervised in the EU. If something goes wrong, you have no European supervisor to complain to.

How to check it yourself

- Download the interim register of crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) and search for the exchange’s name and website.
- If it isn’t there, also download the list of non-compliant entities: that’s where those operating without authorization appear.
- For Spain, also check the CNMV’s warnings.
